One Room. More Than One Kind of Light.

The most inviting rooms combine light for focus, comfort, and atmosphere. Start with a practical table or wall light, then add a softer night light or ambient glow to shape the mood after dark.

How to Choose Indoor Lighting

Choose the Purpose
Use task lighting for reading and focused activities, ambient lighting for general comfort, and accent lighting to add depth and atmosphere.

Choose the Power Source
Choose hardwired fixtures for a permanent architectural finish, plug-in lights for simple everyday installation, or rechargeable designs for cordless flexibility.

Choose the Light
Compare lumens for brightness and Kelvin for color appearance. Lower, warmer light feels more relaxing, while brighter or more neutral light supports focused tasks.

Indoor Lighting FAQs

How do I layer task, ambient, and accent lighting in one room?

Start with soft ambient light for general visibility, then add focused task lighting wherever you read, work, or prepare for the day. Finish with a lower-level accent light to highlight a wall, object, or architectural feature, ideally with each layer controlled separately.

What brightness should I choose for a bedroom, desk, or living room?

A desk or reading light often works well around 450–800 lumens, while bedrooms and living rooms benefit from several lower-output, dimmable sources instead of one very bright fixture. Consider room size, wall color, natural light, and the activity being performed when choosing the total output; brightness should be compared in lumens rather than watts.

What color temperature creates a warm and relaxing atmosphere?

Choose approximately 2700K–3000K for bedrooms, living rooms, and other spaces where you want a warm, inviting atmosphere. For focused work, a more neutral light can improve clarity, but avoid mixing very warm and very cool light within the same visual zone.

Should I choose a hardwired, plug-in, or rechargeable light?

Choose hardwired lighting for a permanent, integrated finish; plug-in lighting when an outlet is nearby and easier installation matters; and rechargeable lighting when placement flexibility is the priority. Hardwired fixtures should be installed according to their instructions and applicable electrical requirements.

Where should wall lights be positioned beside a bed or along a hallway?

Beside a bed, position the light slightly above shoulder level when seated and keep any switch comfortably within reach; approximately 55–60 inches from the floor to the top of the fixture is a common starting point. In hallways, place the fixture center around 60–66 inches above the floor, then adjust for ceiling height, fixture size, and glare.

Which indoor lights are suitable for overnight use?

Only use a light overnight when the manufacturer identifies it as suitable for extended use, and follow its charging, placement, and ventilation instructions. Choose a low-output LED with dimming or a timer when possible, and keep damaged cords, covered fixtures, and accessible button batteries away from children.
